To knit the bud flowers pattern women's vest, you'll need:

  • Worsted weight yarn in your desired color
  • Knitting needles in size US 7 (4.5 mm)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Size: Women's medium

Instructions:

Back:

  1. Cast on 90 sts.

  2. Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 1 inch.

  3. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side) and knit for 4 inches.

  4. Begin the bud flowers pattern. The pattern repeat is over 10 stitches and 14 rows:

Rows 1 and 3 (RS): K2, p2, k3, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1

Rows 2 and 4 (WS): Purl

Rows 5 and 7: K1, yo, ssk, k2, p2, k2, k2tog, yo, k1

Rows 6 and 8: Purl

Rows 9 and 11: K2tog, yo, k3, p2, k3, yo, ssk

Rows 10 and 12: Purl

Rows 13 and 14: Knit

Repeat these 14 rows until the piece measures 13 inches from the cast-on edge, ending after working a WS row.

  1. Work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 17 inches from the cast-on edge.

  2. Begin the armhole shaping:

Row 1 (RS): Bind off 6 sts, knit to end of row.

Row 2 (WS): Purl.

Row 3 (RS): Knit to 2 sts before the bound-off sts, k2tog, knit to end of row.

Row 4 (WS): Purl.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until 74 sts remain, then work even in stockinette stitch until the armhole measures 7 inches.

  1. Begin the shoulder shaping:
Row 1 (RS): Bind off 8 sts, knit to end of row.

Row 2 (WS): Purl.

Row 3 (RS): Knit to 2 sts before the bound-off sts, k2tog, knit to end of row.

Row 4 (WS): Purl. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until 30 sts remain, then bind off all stitches.

Front:

The front is worked the same as the back until the armhole shaping.

Armhole shaping:

Row 1 (RS): Bind off 6 sts, knit to end of row.

Row 2 (WS): Purl.

Row 3 (RS): Knit to 2 sts before the bound-off sts, k2tog, knit to end of row.

Row 4 (WS): Purl.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until 38 sts remain, then work even in stockinette stitch until the armhole measures 5 inches.

Neck shaping:

  1. BO 6 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
  2. BO 3 (3, 4, 4, 5) sts at the beginning of next 4 (4, 6, 6, 8) rows.
  3. BO 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
  4. BO 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
Next, work in pattern until armhole measures 7 (7.5, 8, 8.5, 9) inches, ending with RS row.

Armhole shaping:

  1. BO 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
  2. BO 2 (2, 3, 3, 4) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
  3. BO 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) st at the beginning of next 2 rows.
  4. BO 1 st at the beginning of next 2 rows.
Next, work in pattern until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10) inches, ending with RS row.

Shoulder shaping:

  1. BO 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) sts at the beginning of next 4 (4, 4, 4, 6) rows.
  2. BO 9 (9, 10, 10, 11) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
  3. BO 11 (12, 12, 13, 13) sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
Cut yarn and repeat on other side.

Finishing:

  1. Sew the shoulders together.

  2. With circular needles, pick up and knit 90 (96, 102, 108, 114) sts evenly around the armhole.

  3. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1 inch.

  4. BO all stitches loosely in ribbing pattern.

  5. With circular needles, pick up and knit 82 (86, 90, 94, 98) sts evenly around the neck.

  6. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1 inch.

  7. BO all stitches loosely in ribbing pattern.

  8. Sew the side seams together.
